Mizuna Mustard
The Mustard Mizuna Siu Cai, Xiu Cai, 'Brassica rapa', is the perfect mustard green with its mild, sweet, earthy, mustardy flavor that tolerates cold and heat. It is so attractive that it is used as an ornamental. Commonly used as a graceful bedding plant that "floats" in the flower beds and as a sweet, mild mustard green that is ready to harvest in 3 weeks. Mizuna looks are deceptive; it is a beautiful graceful prolific branching plant that will also germinate under cold and wet spring conditions. It is a common mixture in Mesclun salads and it is also steamed and stir-fried. Plant as soon as the soil can be worked in the spring. Successive plantings every 3 weeks will provide for continuous harvest. In mild climates, plant in the late fall for winter harvest. Mizuna prefers light, moist, loamy soils with lots of organic matter. You can harvest a few leaves from each plant anytime after germination. ... more
Sweet Pea - America The Sweet Pea America, 'Lathyrus odoratus', is a very old heirloom sweet pea traced back to 1896. The America is very fragrant and is a summer bloomer. The blooming period depends partially upon the weather because the plants usually stop blooming once the weather warms up. The Sweet Pea America has 2 inch flowers that are white with crimson stripes. A key element in successful growing of the Sweet Pea America is very early planting. The sweet pea prefers deep, rich, fertile soil. Position them away from winds and rotate locations from year to year to prevent sweet pea pests. In cold climates plant the seed in early spring, as soon as the soil can be worked. They are used for cut flowers and for covering fences and walls if given the proper support.
