The Strobilanthes Persian Shield, 'Strobilanthes dyerianus', is an Athens Select variety. In summers with sweltering heat, this plant displays multi-colored foliage that is always exquisite. The leaves are a flushed purple with silver iridescence and dark purple underneath. Warmer temperatures enhance the leaf color. Persian Shield performs best in partial shade, planted in well drained organic soil. This plant has an upright habit and can reach 3 foot in height. They are widely used in landscape beds or in mixed containers. Persian Shield tends to get tall and fall over, so pinch back a few times in the first half of the growing season to induce branching and bushier foliage. The peachy pink sepals with white corolla flowers perch well above the bushy small leaved foliage. This Proven Selections plant blooms all summer long. They are great plants for greenhouses, window boxes, baskets, homes, and flower beds. Fuchsias should be planted in warm, sheltered spots in well-drained soil. These plants have dark green leaves often with red stems. The flowers, which are produced during the summer and early fall, are droopy and come in many colors. Fuschia is one of the Hummingbirds favorite flowers. Fuchsias do not like to dry out. In many parts of the country (and especially if planted in a hanging pot) the fuchsia will require daily watering. For zones 9-11, this plant can also be a perennial.
