Sweet William - Double Mix
The Sweet William Double Blend, 'Dianthus barbatus', is prized as a long lasting cut flower and it fills the flower void between spring bulbs, but before summer annuals. The Double Blend is an attractive 18 inch dome of a myriad of beautiful flower colors. The 1/2 inch flowers occur in densely packed flattened heads, 3 to 5 inches in diameter. The flowers colors are white, pink, rose, red, purplish, and bicolored. Sweet Williams bloom in late spring for about 4 weeks. Sweet William prefers full sun and light sandy, well drained soil. Dianthus prefer a fairly a slightly alkaline and rich soil. Shear off faded blooms and the plant may come back and bloom the following year. Plant in the spring after the last average frost date. Carrot - Healthmaster This carrot will have a length of 10 inches and a crown of 3 inches and weigh more than a pound. The Healthmaster is resistant to growth cracks and has excellent flavor. Thsi carrot is great for juicers. Carrot seed germinates in soils as cold as 45 degrees, but performs best in warm soils. The first sowing should be 2 to 4 weeks before the last frost. In very warm climates carrots are grown primarily in the fall. The single most important factor in growing carrots is to have a deep, clod and rock free, well drained soil. A 50% peat moss mix with the soil is ideal. Even moisture is essential.
